'Bristol from snow to sunshine' cityscape and landscape paintings in oil by Nigel Shipley By painting in the open air, directly from his scene, Nigel Shipley achieves a freshness and life that cannot be achieved by painting in a studio from photographs or sketches. His richly atmospheric paintings have an impasto which gives them a sculptural reality rather than just being a smooth window into the world beyond. The shapes of the brush marks convey feeling, as if a kind of handwriting, that directly expresses emotions or a response to the subject.

His subjects are the everyday corners of Bristol and the surrounding area; the harbour, woodlands, streets of the commercial centre and railway bridges. Nigel avoids painting the city’s icons, such as the Clifton suspension bridge, but if an icon happens to sneak into the corner of a painting – so be it. He is especially interested in the kinds of things that are such a part of our daily life that we no longer notice them.
Nigel Shipley studied at Harrow and Norwich Schools of Art and has a BA (Hons) in Fine Art. He won the Cube Cinema Award for his painting at the Bristol Show.
